About Studio Tuft

Studio Tuft aims to bring a bit of joy to your floors with beautiful hand tufted rugs.

Founder, maker and designer Jessie James hand tufts rugs from her studio in Stroud, Gloucestershire.

It starts with wool. Digging for diamonds in the rough is part of Jessie’s quest: to source the finest yarns while rescuing dead stock from being wasted.

Sustainability is in the very fabric of Studio Tuft’s practices and this ethos rewards us with a rich and lively palette for rugs that feel lusciously generous underfoot.

Taking cues from mid-century design, Jessie weaves a Bauhaus thread through her free-form patterns that take shape in an organic process. Observations from the world around are reimagined as Jessie feels her way with colour and tufts them into being.

The result is a handmade rug of exceptional quality that takes its place at the intersection of artefact, ornament, and function.

Jessie is a proud member of the Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen. A selection of Studio Tuft rugs can be found at their Cheltenham shop.

How tufting works

Jessie uses a top of the range air fed Hoffman tufting gun to ensure the pile is thick and luxurious.

She tufts onto a frame stretched with a backing fabric, working from behind, draws her designs with wool as she goes.

Once the rugs are tufted and the back is secured with latex, Jessie hand sculpts the edges to flow into the floor, making them crisp but soft . The front face is sheared with a flat plate shearing machine to give the rugs a high-quality finish.
