How to clean a tufted rug

Do you worry about how to clean a tufted rug? It looks scary but it is easy to do and not as daunting as you first thought! You know you CANNOT put it in the washing machine and that’s it. Here I will show you how to clean your own tufted rug.

Firstly here’s my top tip for cleaning tufted rugs

Hoover it once a week (or more), this will basic advice for anyone with a tufted rug. Hoovering often cleans the debris out from in between the fibers, makes the strands stand upright and tight together.

This is a great foundation for any spills or things that get on to the rug. You don’t want them to be caught up in un necessary dust or dirt already embedded in the tufted rugs pile.

The best way to clean tufted rugs

I always recommend Dr Beckmans carpet stain remover. You can purchase them from most supermarkets in the UK it is a white bottle with a green/blue bush attached to the top.

For best results follow the instructions on the bottle.

Squeeze bottle to wet the brush head on bottle. Use brush to scrub area, you want a small foam so keep squeezing the bottle here and there.

Leave to foam for 3 minutes then use a clean cloth and water to blot the stain out of the rug. Repeat until the stain is gone.

Has something gone wrong? How to clean mud off a tufted rug

Wet muddy foot prints can look alarming, weather it was an accident or a playful pet but they are one of the easiest things to clean up.

The first thing is to leave it completey alone, don’t dab or touch it at all. Touching it will embed the mud more into the fibers.

Next wait for it to dry completely, I often leave it overnight and then a bit more time. You want the mud to be completely bone dry.

Then with a stiff brush all you need to do is brush off the mud, it should all come off in a small dust. If it is still muddy let dry longer and repeat once dry again.

How to clean wine off a tufted rug

Have you spilt a whole glass of red wine on your new rug? Not to worry here is how you clean red wine off a tufted rug.

Blot away ask much as possible use an old towel or LOTS of paper towels fold up and lean your body weight onto it turn the towel over to a fresh surface and repeat un till it is all blotted up you should see a difference in colour already.

NOTE: do NOT scrub this will set the stain into the rug fibers. Keep everything COLD so as not to set in the stain.

Next spot clean, there are 2 different solutions you can use

  1. Equal parts water and rubbing alcohol and a pea sized squeeze of fairy liquid or washing detergent. Use a spray bottle to generously spray the area with the solution. Blot again and hoover with a wet and dry vacuum. Repete until the stain is gone.

  2. 1 tbl spoon white vinegar and 1 tbl spoon washing up liquid mixed in a mug filled 2/3 of water. put solution on stain bit by bit and blot until stain has disappeared.

Advice: Use a towel and blot with your body weight so you don’t have lots of tissue bits on your rug. Act fast so the stain doesnt set in!
