5 ways to style your studio tuft rug when you don’t have much space

I get living somewhere small I live in a small 2 bed flat, there are 3 of us and 2 cats, it can be very cramped, but I love it. Whether you live in a Cornish cottage, a small flat in Bristol, a bed sit in London or you are renting the small box room in a shared house having a space that is yours and expresses yourself is important.

Here are 5 practical tips to style your tufted rug when you don’t have much space and want to make a statement.

  1. Circular and oval rugs fill space better than a rectangle.

If you have a tricky space to fill or you are not sure on the size a circular rug is the perfect solution. The curved shape leaves more floor showing giving a great rug to floor ratio and often making the room feel a little bit bigger.

With a circular rug there are no sides so your eyes are not comparing it to the straight angles in the room. Trust me the amount of times I have put a circular rug down on a clients floor and it’s been the perfect size is incredible, the shape always fills the space and looks fabulous too. The round edges of the rug really give the room a softer feel.

2. Choose a slightly smaller tufted rug for your space

The floor to rug ratio can be important when buying a rug, you often see people place rugs under sofas and beds. In smaller spaces I recommend the opposite, pick a rug with that has at least a 10cm gap around the area you intend to put it in this creates the illusion of extra space.

Choosing a slightly smaller rug gives the rugs space and makes more of an impact, the extra floor area will make the room feel less heavy and more airy and spacious.

3. Place your tufted rug in the center of the room

The placement of your rug is key in small spaces, putting your rug in the centre of the room makes it a focal point and draws your eye to the centre of the room rather than the edges. Creating a focus with a statement rug is a great way to add personal style and tie a room together.

I often suggest picking a few colours from things in your home to tie everything together and anchor the rug in the room. The central positioning will create the feeling of unity and space to the room.

4. Go bold when choosing your tufted rug pattern design

Picking a rug with a bold or statement design is a great way to style up your smaller home, you can do this with either a subtle or bright pop of colour.

Lighter tones will make your room feel larger especially if the walls are lighter too, why not try a pastel coloured rug to give your room a little lift, the bright airy tones will keep the room fresh and airy.

Alternatively you could go for the contrast and try a bright pop of colour, perhaps a bit of unexpected red? This can make a bright statement and become the focus of the room. If you have lighter walls this can create a grounding feeling for the room.

5. Commission a bespoke tufted rug

A lot of the time with small spaces you need something that fits it just right, part of the charm of small homes is the quirky little spaces that are odd shapes and sizes. Commissioning your own tufted rug is a way to get the perfect rug in the right size for your home. It’s a simple process and you can choose any shape or size to fit your space. With something bespoke you can incorporate all of the above tips and create the perfect rug for your home. For example as your walk into my flat there is a little alcove, we have a shoe rack there and a chair, I designed a rug that fit perfectly in the space. It looks great!
